ECOWAS leaders on Monday met at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja and insisted that Gambian President Yahya Jameh respect the constitution of his country.

Those in attendance were President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, Hellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Liberia), Macky Sall (Senagal), Ghanaian immediate past president John Mahama, the ECOWAS Commission President and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General.

Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama, briefed State House correspondents after the three-hour closed-door meeting hosted by Buhari, said the leaders agreed to meet Jameh on Wednesday on the imperative to respect the constitution of the country.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh had refused to accept defeat in the last month’s presidential election after he had initially accepted his loss in poll, but later changed his stance and vowed to cling on to power.

Onyeama said those to meet with Jameh on Wednesday are President Buhari, his Liberian and Sierra leon counterparts, former Ghanaian president John Mahama, a special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and a representative of the African Union.
