JIGAWA: 1 killed, vehicle set ablaze in FRSC, NURTW clash

One person was killed as when irate mob attacked the Jigawa State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) as one of their patrol vehicles was set ablaze while two others were smashed.

Crisis broke out yesterday when members of the corps impounded vehicles belonging to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) who stormed the FRSC office protesting.

An eyewitness told Daily Trust that the fracas reached its peak upon the arrival of operatives of  the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who began to shoot in to the air and in the process shot two persons.

A driver and a member of NURTW, Hussaini Andaza, was shot on the head and died on the spot.

The sources added that that prior to the arrival of members of NSCDC the situation had started calming down as the policemen had brought the situation under control.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the chairman of the state branch of NURTW, Hussaini Umar DK, faulted both the NSCDC and the FRSC for the incident.

The spokesperson of the NSCDC, DSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed that a member of the NURTW was shot, but in self-defence.

Contacted, the FRSC State Sector Commander,  Angus Obumneme Ebezim said he was surpried at the incident considering the good working relationship between the organisations. The state police commissioner, Rasheed Akintunde, confirmed the incident.
