The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the renaming of Khadijah University, Majia, to Jigawa State University of Medical and Applied Health Sciences subject to approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The decision followed the acquisition of the institution by the state government and aligns with efforts to expand access to specialised medical education.

The Commissioner for Information, Hon Sagir Musa Ahmad, said the renaming reflected the government’s plan to reposition the university as a centre for training medical and health professionals.

He said the move would create opportunities for students to pursue careers in medicine, nursing, public health and allied health sciences, helping to address manpower shortages in the health sector.

The council expressed confidence that the rebranding would enhance the institution’s academic profile, attract qualified faculty and increased student enrolment.

It assured stakeholders that the process would comply strictly with NUC regulations and pledged continued funding and infrastructure support.
