Idris told Daily Trust that: “The state government has set up a technical implementation committee headed by the Commissioner of Environment with stakeholders drawn from relevant ministries and agencies. The idea is that each state in the Greater Green Wall programme will plant 500 hectares of land using 500,000 seedlings with 34,000 of the seedling being economic trees.”
He said the Greater Green Wall is to be financed by the federal government while the state makes its input where necessary.
The Director said the green belt would reduce the velocity of the wind, ameliorate environmental condition of the area and reduce excess heat during the dry season.
He said the initiative would also provide sources of livelihood through the provision of wind powered boreholes for domestic purposes, establishment of orchard, alternative energy source and provide employment for people who will supervise the nurseries that will be established in the communities.
