Jigawa State students across some selected federal tertiary institutions have lauded the government’s decision to pay their registration fees as part of palliatives to cushion the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.
Daily Trust reports that the decision of the government was announced yesterday by the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmed, after the State Executive Council Meeting.
He said the government therefore allocated N167million to facilitate the initiative as part of the administration’s commitment to ensuring that education remains accessible to all segments of society while the government is planning to review Jigawa State students’ bursaries at all higher institutions.
The institutions covered under the development are Federal University, Dutse (FUD), Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Kano State University of Technology (KUST), and University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).

Speaking with Daily Trust, some students of the Federal University, Dutse expressed their happiness towards the development.
Daily Trust gathered that parents have also joined their wards in appreciating the governor’s support saying that the development would allow their children proceed with their higher education studies.
In a related development, as part of efforts to address the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal, the State Executive Council has also approved the release of N3.8billion for the procurement of additional food items for distribution across the 27 local government areas within the state, Hamisu Gumel, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor said.
Gumel revealed that the approved procurement includes: 70 trucks of rice (600 bags per truck), 54 trucks of millet & maize (600 bags per truck) and 1,000 cartons of spaghetti to be purchased through the joint financial contribution of the federal, state and LGAs.
