President Goodluck Jonathan has cancelled his trip to Chibok, Borno State, where about 270 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram militants over a month ago.

The president was earlier scheduled to visit Chibok this morning.

His advance team which left the Presidential Villa Abuja yesterday, is currently in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, awaiting the president’s arrival.

Jonathan will rather proceed to Paris today to participate in a summit convened by President Francois Hollande to discuss fresh strategies for dealing with the security threat posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in West and Central Africa.

It is not clear yet why Jonathan abruptly cancelled his trip to Chibok, but Reuters this morning quoted a source as citing security fears.

“The president was planning to go but security advised otherwise on the visit,” Reuters quoted the source to have said.

The president had come under criticism for having not visited Chibok since the girls were abducted.
