Universities formed the least group of exhibitors, next to eight colleges of education, nine private-sector innovators, 21 polytechnics and 34 unity colleges.
Speaking at the start of the exhibition in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan criticised “unnecessary disruptions” in Nigeria school’s system in veiled reference to the four-month strike.
In comments delivered by supervising education minister Nyesom Wike, the president spoke of need to demonstrate patriotism in “situations that involved the future of our children and country.”
“We need therefore to be conscious of our children, institutions and country at large of unnecessary disruptions in education,” he said, insisting on a need for dialogue.
Many of the innovations are similar to those presented at last year’s innovation but are yet to gather financial backing to see them commercialised, he admitted.
He noted it was impossible to have enough resources to support education sector because of “competing challenges.”
“Our institutions must not continue to be isolated from what happens in society,” the president observed.
Considering government investment in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges and unity schools in recent years, he said, “The challenge is getting value for the nation in terms of quality education and research output.”
“We still have a lot of challenges ahead of the nation in linking the output of our institutions to national development need,” he added.
