The president made the commitment when he hosted the UN-Habitat officials, Mr Andrew Cox and Professor Oyebanji Oyeyinka recently in Nairobi during his three-day state visit to Kenya.
The president hailed the new African urban agenda, saying it is important for Nigeria’s urbanization. He gave the development of Abuja as example of the benefits of the agenda.
Earlier, Cox on behalf of UN-Habitat Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos thanked the president for the growing partnership with Nigeria.
He sought political support of Nigeria in driving urban issues in the sustainable development agenda and pointed to the link between sustainable development and the Habitat III conference, as well as the significance of this conference for Africa and Nigeria.
Cox informed President Jonathan that the forthcoming breakfast meeting in New York will outline how UN-Habitat might be used to drive the new African urban agenda.
He encouraged the president to attend. Jonathan agreed to attend the New York event.
Also present at the meeting was the Nigerian High Commissioner to Kenya Mr Akin Oyateru.
