In a short speech he delivered at the burial ceremony of his late mother in-law, Madam Charity Fyneface Oba in Okrika yesterday, Jonathan said people were free to go on and criticize but what really matters “is posterity.”
The President used the occasion to enjoin Nigerians to imbibe the attitude of doing good to people all the time, irrespective of criticisms against them, adding that his late mother in-law was a woman of high virtue who lived an exemplary life.
Jonathan’s administration has been adjudged as the most criticized in recent times in the history of Nigeria with some PDP members led by the factional chairman, Alhaji Kawu Abubakar Baraje and the G-7 governors leading the pack.
He however promised to lead the country with the fear of God irrespective of what people may say about him, stating that “I am more concerned about posterity than what people say. People can criticize but I want to be remembered by the good works that I did,” Jonathan said.
Earlier in his sermon, the officiating Minister, Prof. Simon Nworah charged humanity to always dwell in good doing as the only way of keeping “a good record when we are gone from the earth.”
In her tribute, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan confessed that her late mother “labored in love to make me what I am today…”
Patience said the deceased “raised me from a tender age until I was able to stand on the world’s stage. You taught me right from wrong and made me virtuous and strong,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi was the cynosure of all eyes at the colorful event as he performed an emotional dance to the rendition of a popular gospel artiste, Yinka Ayefele.
The governor who was close to tears danced to the admiration of the large crowd that graced the occasion though no member of his cabinet was present at the event.
It was earlier feared that Amaechi may shun the burial, but he  braced all odds to make himself available for the well attended burial which looked  more like a political gathering.
