The Rev. Light Ukpu, the Chairman, Central Working Committee of the tournament, said 12 oil producing states would compete for the trophy tagged “Jonathan Peace and Unity Cup’’.
Ukpu said Sokoto, Borno, Niger and Plateau would compete as observers and explained that the contest was aimed at engaging the youth meaningfully in sports.
“This is in furtherance of the consolidation on the gains of the fruitful implementation of the Federal Government’s ongoing amnesty programme,’’ he said.
Ukpu said the primary objective of the competition was to foster peaceful co-existence and discipline, as well as to engender greater social interaction among Nigerian youths.
He said the organisers’ interest was in developing sports from the grass roots, and added that the organisation would organise competitions in other sports.
“We are starting with football because of our passion for the game,’’ he said.
The committee chairman said the tournament would be used to reawaken all other dormant youth tournaments in the country.
