The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) has alerted its customers in Bauchi State about the persistent attacks on its electric cables and other installations, lamenting the financial losses, disruption of power and losses of lives within its franchise areas.

The JEDC State Operating Officer in Bauchi State, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar, made a plea while speaking with journalists on the activities of the vandals on the company’s assets, saying the rising cases of vandalism in Bauchi are causing financial losses for the company because “we are spending a lot of money to replace vandalised and stolen equipment; the money that is supposed to be used to improve our network.”

Abubakar explained, “Vandalism is one of the issues we have and it has some many negative effects on our business and the populace. Whenever there’s vandalism there are disruptions of power not just for a short time but sometimes for a long period of time affecting businesses and other critical sectors of the economy such as hospitals, schools and other commercial centres.”

Abubakar added that vandalism is also negatively affecting medium and small enterprises.

He said apart from the issues of safety leading to fire outbreak, electrocution, “We urge our customers to play the role of security in their various communities. This act puts more financial burden on us as a company, it has economic loss to our customers as well and talking of the danger associated with vandalism, it cannot be measured.”

Abubakar noted that about 11 suspects are with the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. “We appeal to communities to be vigilant and overlook installations around them so as to curb the menace of vandalism and reduce the financial losses as well as power outages at home, hospitals and offices across the country generally,” he said.

Abubakar commended the security agencies for bringing the perpetrators to justice, adding that the company would deepen collaboration with the community to enlighten them on the security of the power cables and transformers.
