The annual Jos festival of theatre a brainchild of the Jos Repertory Theatre begins today in Jos the Plateau State capital.
The event which is in its tenth year is holding at the Alliance Française for three days and will feature two new playwrights in the premiere of their plays within the festival, supported by Grand Cereals Limited.
The plays to be featured include Akolo James Anthony’s ‘Late Pam,’ Umoren Ubond David’s ‘Bullion Stride’ and Miguel de Cervantes’ ‘Rinconete and Cortadillo’ which had its Nigerian premiere earlier in April at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the death of the Spanish playwright, Miguel de Cervantes.
JRT artistic director, Mr. Patrick Oteh, said: “All the plays selected for the prelude to the main festival will be addressing issues of youth restiveness and unemployment and what the youths do with themselves while waiting for the promises that are still in the pipeline.”
He said: “There will be raffle draws by Grand Cereals Limited at the opening and closing ceremonies of the mini-festival.”
