The 2025 Bauchi Annual Polo International tournament lived up to its billing as more than just a sporting contest — it was a spectacle of passion, colour, and top-class polo that kept spectators enthralled from start to finish.
Staged at the packed Col. Umar Dangiwa Polo Ground from July 21–26, the tournament produced worthy champions, with Jos Malcomines, Kano Polo Cola, Crown Club and Bauchi Triple S among the big winners.
Defending champions Jos Malcomines once again stamped their dominance, brushing aside arch-rivals Bauchi Dokaji to claim the prestigious Governor’s Cup for the sixth time. Their victory reaffirmed their status as the undisputed force of polo in Nigeria’s North East.
The Emir of Bauchi Cup and the Sarki Fulani Cup drew some of the loudest cheers of the week, with Jos Crown Club & Resort and Kano Polo Cola emerging as champions. Meanwhile, history was made when Kano’s Pop Cola team battled fiercely to win the revered Sir Tafawa Balewa Cup — their first-ever Bauchi major title.
The Tafawa Balewa Cup, played in honour of Nigeria’s late Prime Minister and Bauchi native Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, proved one of the tournament’s most hotly contested prizes, showcasing the depth of talent in Nigerian polo.
At the grand finale, Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed, represented by Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Salisu Gamawa, congratulated winners and participants while reaffirming government’s commitment to sports development and peaceful coexistence through sporting activities.
