Craters as large and deep enough to sink vehicles are gradually disappearing along urban roads within the Plateau State capital, Jos, after the initiation and launching of a roads’ project christened “Operation Zero Potholes,” a multi-sectoral direct labour project.
The ongoing job, which execution is being carried out by stakeholders in the roads maintenance sub-sector in the state, was initiated by the Plateau State government after Governor Simon Lalong undertook a tour of roads within the metropolis of Jos.
The operation which is already yielding relief to road users in the city, is headed by Sunday Hyat, Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Works, with members of the team of stakeholders drawn from all the agencies combining efforts to execute the job. They include the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Federal Emergency Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), and the state Roads Maintenance Agency.
The job entails rehabilitation and filling of craters on 50 roads identified as giving way, with Mr. Hyat saying already over half of them have been completed to give Jos city the desired facelift. The job is being handled through direct labour.
The 50 roads are some of Plateau’s worst hit by the decades of decay that attended the city’s facilities because of non-maintenance. The present governor has the recovery of the city from this decay, as one of his priorities on the saddle of state.
Daily Trust had reported that the prevailing downpours have further worsened the condition of city roads, some of which were opened up for reconstruction, but later abandoned by the contractors handling the multi-billion naira jobs.
The immediate past administration which was headed by Senator Jonah Jang had in its late days, awarded the multi-billion naira job to PW Nigeria Limited. The project which touches major parts of the city was partly executed before it was abandoned during the last elections,  a development which is causing untold hardship to motorists and other road users because the earth work on much of the roads turned them into mud sites.
