Jos winter polo tourney gallops off festivities
Polo enthusiasts from Lagos and beyond are set for eight days of top-tier action as the 2025 Jos Winter Polo Tournament gallops off at the General Hassan Polo Ground, with more than 20 teams competing for honours in major titles.
The glamorous polo festival will run from December 26, 2025 to January 2, 2026, featuring three prestigious trophies — the Governor’s Cup, NASCO Cup and President Cup — which will keep teams locked in intense, week-long competition to determine the champions of the winter polo fiesta.
President of the Jos Polo Club and Secretary of the Nigerian Polo Federation (NPF), Murtala Laushi, who confirmed the dates, assured polo lovers of a tournament that would surpass previous editions.
Laushi said the organisers, with full backing from the Plateau State Government and key stakeholders, are fully prepared to deliver an exceptional event. “Jos 2025 polo festival will be a festival thriving on ‘strategy, organization, excitement, competition and friendship that would perpetuate the new found peace in the state,’” he stated.
He added: “We made a promise, that we will give it our all and at the end of the day everyone would talk of the 2025 tourney, ‘This is our annual tournament in which we are well pleased.’” Laushi, who is also Patron of the Jos Malcomines team, noted that the club remains committed to excellence.
Beyond polo, the tournament continues its tradition of charity outreach. For several years, Jos Polo and its HANGER partners have hosted Christmas Day charity events for the less privileged. Initiated by Laushi, the programme ends with a party for grooms, club workers and widows of deceased staff, who receive gift items from organisers.
HANGER Project spokesperson, Alison Allanso, expressed delight at the large turnout of children, widows, persons with disabilities and internally displaced persons, describing the charity event as a major highlight of the festival. She thanked donors and sponsors and appealed for support to enable the event to hold twice yearly.
Last year, over 400 beneficiaries received food items, clothing, stationery and educational materials.
Jos Polo Captain, Yusuf Dauda, confirmed that teams from Abuja, Kaduna, Yola, Zaria, Minna, Maiduguri, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi and Keffi are expected. Major trophies at stake include the Governor’s Cup, alongside the NASCO Cup, President Cup and several subsidiary prizes.
The Jos Winter Polo Tournament remains Nigeria’s biggest sports-tourism event, drawing tourists and equestrian enthusiasts to the Plateau State capital annually.
