Managing Director of Joy FM Otukpo, Mrs. Christabel Ebugo Ogli Iyanya, has been elected the pioneer National Deputy President of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB).

Mrs. Iyanya emerged the only female member of the National Executive of the SNB in Abuja yesterday, during the closing ceremony of the Society’s annual conference.

Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Kashere in Gombe State, and renowned Mass Communication Consultant, Professor Umaru Pate was elected the pioneer President, with other broadcasters elected to serve as zonal officers.

Speaking shortly after the election, Professor Pate assured of his Executive’s preparedness to initiate policies that could guarantee the benefits and protect integrity of broadcasters in the country, suing for support to enable the leadership succeed.

On her part, the National Deputy President of SNB, Mrs. Iyanya promised to be exemplary on the Society’s leadership, while pledging her loyalty and support to the Society and its leadership.

“I’m glad for this honour done to me. I’m not going to take this for granted. I will not disappoint my Colleagues, especially my home state, Benue. I will liaise with Broadcasters in Benue to make SNB viable.

“I’m glad to be the women Ambassador here. I will shine the light for Benue and Nigerian women and make sure their interest is well protected here”, she added.

Immediate past Director General, DG of Radio Benue and member of the Society, Dr. Charles Iornumbe, who was also at the Conference, expressed happiness that an indigene of Benue emerged as the National Vice President of SNB, which suggests that the State would not be left out in the national scheme of things in the broadcast industry.

Also speaking, the DG of Benue Television, Dr. Patience Achakpaikyo, congratulated her Joy FM counterpart, Mrs. Iyanya, adding that She was equally impressed with outcome of the election.

Mrs. Iyanya was appointed Managing Director of Joy FM, Otukpo, the first private radio station in the North Central of Nigeria, in 2006, setting the pace for independent and digital broadcasting in Nigeria and Africa.

Her exploits at the trailblazing radio station in Benue State endeared her into the heart of Broadcasters in Nigeria, and in 2013, Mrs. Iyanya was overwhelmingly voted as Chairman of Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria, BON, Zone D, for a two year tenure, which she held back-to-back for 4 consecutive tenures, breaking the record in that circle.

Mrs. Iyanya also made history as the first woman to so occupy the position of Zonal Chairman of BON and first woman to become a member of Central Working Committee, CWC of BON, the position she still holds till date.

A seasoned and accomplished Broadcaster, Mrs. Iyanya, a native of Otukpo in Benue State, is an alumnus of the prestigious University of Jos and Benue State University, Makurdi, where she bagged her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and Masters of Arts in Theatre Arts, respectively, and NIPSS, Kuru, Jos.

Registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC in 1994, the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters provides platform and inspiration for both serving and retired broadcasters in Nigeria.

The body also serves as a think-tank on matters relating to broadcasting and other issues, while maintaining close liaison with similar societies or associations across the globe.
