JTF uncovers illegal distilleries, arrests 2 in A/Ibom

A joint task force comprising the police, civil defence, Ministry of Environment and Eket LGA has uncovered two illegal distilleries in Ikot Abia, Okon Eket in Akwa Ibom State.

Two persons were arrested in the raid of the distilleries where fake alcoholic beverages are produced and circulated to consumers in the area.

Speaking on Wednesday in Eket after the raid, the Divisional Police Officer of Eket, DSP Sunday Digha, said the exhibits recovered from the raid would be taken to the station, while the culprits would be charged to court.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr Michael Effiong said the ministry joined in the collaborated raid based on intelligence reports gathered from youths in the area.

Effiong stated that the perpetrators of the act had turned Eket and its environs into an industrial hub for producing illegal drinks.
