Judge berates court staff over indiscipline

A judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Jude Okekel, has criticized staff of his court over  truancy during sitting hours.

Justice Okeke warned the staff that any further “act of indiscipline” would not be accepted.

The warning followed the absence of the court clerk and other staff after break, around 1.30pm. The judge was to attend to some cases requiring the calling of exhibits, but no staff was available to produce them.

The judge consequently adjourned all cases for that day to October 22 for hearing.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, in April cautioned all staff of courts to work within the dictates of the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers and Court Employees.

“Consequently, directors and inspectors must be up and doing as they are expected to pay regular visits to the courts in order to inspect the personnel and facilities therein,” he said.
