Judge decries delay in prosecution of Cynthia killers

Cynthia was murdered in her room at Cosmilla Hotel, Lake View Estate, Festac Town in Lagos by her Facebook friends.
Specifically, the defendants – Okwumo Nwabufo 36; Olisaeloka Ezike, 27; Orji Osita, 35 and Ezike Nonso, 27, were charged to court for conspiracy and murder.
After the prosecution had concluded its case, the judge had adjourned till October 3 (yesterday) for the opening of defence.
Two of the lawyers to the defendants were absent in court for the defense
The judge wondered why the case was being delayed and threatened to go on it on the next adjourned date.
According to her, the lawyer to the first defendant failed to be in court, and never wrote any letter to the court, while the same lawyer sent a text message to the prosecutor, Abiola Adeyinka that he would not be in court owing to the need to attend an eye clinic.
The fourth accused (Nonso), on the other hand, when asked about his lawyer, told the court that the lawyer assured him that he would be in court.
Justice Akinlade, who was obviously displeased with the development, had queried why the lawyers were not in court.
She said: “I don’t know why they are delaying this matter. They are not even concerned that the first and second defendants are in custody.’’
The case was consequently adjourned to October 10, 2014.
