A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, voided the impeachment of Phillip Shuaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The House of Assembly had removed Shuaibu after he fell out with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

But Shuaibu headed for the court to challenge his removal, which he said was unconstitutional.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice James Omotoso said the impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly was illegal and unconstitutional.

The judge held that the impeachment was in gross violation of the Constitution.

Aside from restoring Shaibu, the court also ordered that his salaries and allowances should be paid to him from April.

The judge ordered Kayode Egbetoku, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to provide Shuaibu with needed security to enable him resume office and perform the functions of the office until the end of his tenure later this year.

Shauibu was elected alongside Obaseki in 2016 and the both got reelected in 2020.

However, Shuaibu fell out with Obaseki over his quest to succeed him as governor.
