A middle-aged woman was on Sunday alleged to have been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers in Benin metropolis, the Edo State capital.

It was gathered that the woman whose identity is not yet known was Kidnapped along Ogeifa Street, off Mission road, Benin, on her way to attend the 6:00am Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral.

It was further gathered that the gunmen accosted the victim and ordered her into a waiting vehicle and zoom off immediately.

It was learnt that many of the worshippers got wind of the incident when one of the Assistant Parish Priests, Rev. Fr. Mark Okoh, made the announcement in the Church.

A resident of the area who does not want his name in print, said the area has been a haven for criminal who disposed passer-by of their belongings.

He said the church has offered mass for the release and safe return of the woman.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said the allegation was not true.

He said “The alleged kidnap is not true. I don’t know where people get this unfounded rumour.

He explained, “cultists were on rampage. We made adequate deployment to key areas, a sizeable number of the cultists have been arrested and a reasonable number of their arms and ammunition have been recovered.”
