English Premier League club Liverpool have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect.

The Dutch manager leaves Anfield after a turbulent campaign in which the Reds surrendered their Premier League crown following a disappointing title defence.

Slot, who guided Liverpool to the league title in his debut season, departs with one year remaining on the three-year contract he signed upon his arrival.

Liverpool suffered 12 league defeats in the just-concluded season, prompting the club to make the difficult decision despite Slot having delivered the club’s historic 20th English top-flight title.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the club’s owners thanked Slot for his significant contribution during his two-year spell in charge, describing his departure as a difficult but necessary decision.

The statement also commended the former Feyenoord manager for his professionalism, work ethic and leadership, particularly during the period following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident.

According to the club, a change in direction was deemed necessary as Liverpool seek a new trajectory.

“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.

“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

Slot leaves Liverpool having won one Premier League title during his tenure. The Reds also recorded 20 defeats across all competitions this season, a figure reported to be the highest for a Liverpool manager in a single campaign.
