Kadpoly’s ENACTUS team beat 40 other contesting schools in July at the Student in Free Enterprise national competition in Lagos, before heading to Cancun to represent Nigeria at the four-day event which ended October 1.
In third position, Kadpoly beat higher institutions from countries as widespread as the United State, China, France, Malaysia, Singapore and Korea, said the school’s rector Mohammed Ibrahim when he received the team on its return.
He said: “The euphoria that greeted the national victory  has not yet died down when the team once again demonstrated the quality Kaduna Polytechnic is reputed for by emerging third out of 35 countries that participated in the competition.”
Ibrahim said the victory by Enactus Kadpoly, formerly Kadpoly SIFE, was the result of two of its numerous outreach projects, including Project Evergreen, executed in Mai’adua and Kaita Local Government Areas of Katsina state and the Power in my Palm (PIMP) project at Kaduna State Rehabilitation Centre.
In PIMP, the team trained physically challenged people in sustainable trades including bag production and basket weaving; in Katsina state, it trained 750 rural women in two council areas in how to fabricate local stoves instead of depending on firewood, which encourages tree felling.
While he noted that the victory has confirmed Kaduna Polytechnic’s desire to equip Nigerians’ skills in formal and informal sector of the economy, Dr. Ibrahim urged Federal Government to convert the institution into a degree- awarding status so that lecturers can rise to become professors while students too can receive training up to doctorate degree level.
“The victory of Kadpoly Enactus team may turn out to be sour as many universities in Nigeria and other countries in the world who now have come to believe beyond reasonable doubt that Kadpoly has in its kitty, best brain in the academia, will come as usual to lure them out of the Polytechnic,” he said. “The only solution to this menace is for FG to upgrade the institution to a University.”
The team leader, Ameh Linus, a 400level student of education technology, said the competition was very challenging but that the passion they had for the projects helped them to scale through.
“We had a lot of sleepless nights to prepare for the competition because it wasn’t easy combining the preparation with the normal school work. It took us two months to prepare for the competition,” he said.
Only 14 of 130 students on the team took part in the competition for Kadpoly ENACTUS, which hopes to target first position in the next international contest.
