Speaking recently at the Green Field Day organised by Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) in collaboration with Kaduna State Agricultural Development Programme (KADP), the Kaduna State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Isaac Bodam, said the farmers were taught modern techniques in agriculture in order to improve their income and get more yields within a specified plot of land.
Represented by the Birnin Gwari Zonal Manager of KADP, Alhaji Sirajo Abubakar Yahaya, the Commissioner said that the participation of the female farmers, who outnumber their male counterparts at the event, was encouraging.
“This programme is an innovative extension project  aimed at teaching farmers in Kaduna State modern techniques in agriculture in order to improve their income. The project will also enable them to get more yields within a specified plot of land.”
In his speech, Head of Extension Services Unit of Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the research scientist for the AGRA and SAA programme, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Sharifai, said a new technology was introduced in the cultivation of soya beans, sorghum and maize, inoculation of planting seeds, fertiliser application and spacing of crops.
He said farmers will be linked to bulk buyers of commodities in Kano and Zaria who will buy their products at prices higher than what the farmers can realise in the open markets.
