The Kaduna State government has expressed concern over the worsening poverty level in the state, which it said is largely due to expensive healthcare access.

The Director General of the Kaduna State Contributory Health Management Authority, Alhaji Abubakar Hassan, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day engagement workshop with media managers in Kaduna.

He said government was disturbed that about 84 per cent of the citizens of the state have been driven to below the poverty line due largely to expensive healthcare access and out-of-pocket expenses.

Hassan lamented that it was unacceptable that the state is today number six amongst states with the highest maternal mortality in the country.

The DG stated that the government has resolved to change the narratives through its almost three-year-old Contributory Health Management scheme adding, “The success in the realisation of this objective largely depends on media support, cooperation and understanding, hence the media workshop.”

He therefore appealed to the media, in view of their roles in society, and the importance of health to all, to assist in the fortification of KADCHMA to achieve its aims and objectives of getting and ensuring that every resident of the state benefits from the health contributory scheme to access healthcare with little financial implications.
