 The Kaduna State government is proposing the sum of N165million in its 2019 budget for the procurement of reproductive health/child spacing commodities and consumables.

The State Reproductive Health/Family Planning Coordinator, Hajiya Nafisa Isa Musa disclosed this yesterday at a two-day step-down training on child spacing budget monitoring, analysis and scorecard system for key stakeholders organized by the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI2).

  

The state had created a budget line for family planning (child spacing) with the sum of N100million earmarked in 2017 and N75million in 2018 so as to further reduce the rate of maternal and child mortality in the state.

  

It would be recalled that the state government in March, 2018 released funds for procurement of reproductive health/child spacing commodities and consumables worth N97.9million for onward distribution to service delivery points across the state.

 

DailyTrust gathered that women in Kaduna State spend an average of N500 to access child spacing services, as such; financial constraint has kept a large number of them from going to health facilities to access the services. Studies have also shown that child spacing alone can help a nation reduce its maternal deaths burden by more than 30%. With North-West Nigeria’s high maternal death ratio of 1,024 per 100,000 live birth (NDHS 2013), Kaduna state has shown commitment and leadership in reducing the deaths in the geo-political zone. 

  

Earlier in his address, the state team leader of NURHI, Dr. Kabir Abdullahi urged women of reproductive age, particularly those at the grass root to make demands for child spacing services at the approved health facilities in the state.

  

“We need more women to access child spacing services. We have the commodities and consumables at public facilities and service providers that render the service free of charge,” he said.

 

DailyTrust learnt that the executive governor is planning to present the 2019 draft budget to the state assembly by next month, June, 2018.
