Our correspondent who visited some of these roundabouts observed that grasses, flowers and weeds have been allowed to grow so tall within them especially at the NEPA roundabout that those coming from one side of the roundabout may not see those on the other side.
Another roundabout noticed is the one leading to the GOC and Commissioner of Police’s (CP) residence, which can be said to be one of the biggest roundabouts in the state.
A roundabout is a circular intersection or junction in which road traffic is slowed and flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island to several exits onto the various intersecting roads.
One of the motorists interviewed, Abdullateef Ahmed, condemned the act of allowing plants to grow too tall inside the roundabouts saying that though they are ordinarily planted to decorate the roundabout, they should be properly and regularly maintained so that the aesthetic value of the roundabout can be appreciated by the people.
“If not for the traffic light, am sure, many accidents would be taking place by the roundabout and even with the traffic light it is important for a driver to be able see what is happening on the other side of the roundabout,” he said.
In an interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Gajangla Martins, said that whatever decoration the state was doing to its roundabouts, so long as it is not impairing the vision of drivers, there is no cause for alarm.
“But if the flowers or trees have grown too tall, there is need for them to be trimmed down so that they don’t cause havoc,” he added.
Effort to reach the acting General Manager of Kaduna State Public Work Agency (KAPWA), the body charged with the responsibility of maintaining roundabouts in the state, for comments failed.
