The most interesting part of it was the top level political game played between Makarfi-based grassroots politicians supposedly led by Ahmed Hassan Jumare. Jumare currently is the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly and is set to return to the State Assembly from his Makarfi Constituency. Opposed to him is another group which is similarly ambitious. Members of this group are worried that Jumare controls Makarfi politics to the extent of becoming a major influence in the politics of Kaduna State. To them, they stand a better chance than him. This group is made up of old breed politicians. But Jumare is a visionary. Under his leadership, the State Assembly was less cantankerous like it used to be known in the last dispensation, as a result, the state made steady progress.
However, the opposition against him might be fueled by fear of political imbalance because somebody from his zone is working to be made SSG. This in effect means the Speaker position should be traded off to another area. It is my belief that scuttling Jumare’s ambition would further aggravate the already existing political imbalance in the state. With Senator David Mark about staging a comeback as Senate President, that of Jumare should not be different more so that it is within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
As a people, we must not allow the peace efforts of Sen. Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi; Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Vice Chancellor Bayero University, Kano; Alhaji Garba Bala, Deputy Controller, Nigerian Custom Services; Shehu Mohammed, former Provost and Alhaji Lawal Aliyu Mayere to go in vain . If politicians fail to reign in their ambitions, they will inevitably invite disharmony among their people. Senator Makarfi has shown us the way forward when he lost to Datti Baba-Ahmad, by congratulating the latter. That is what the opposition against Jumare should emulate.
