Speaking while presenting a report on reasons behind the inability of agencies concerned to control the menace of indiscriminate dumping of waste and erection of illegal structures in the State, the Co-chairman of Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Solid Minerals and Works, Transport, Lands, Survey and Country Planning, Philemon Usman Gidan Mana said that findings by the joint committee revealed that government spends N95million on refuse evacuation within the State metropolis monthly.
He pointed out that heaps of wastes could obviously be seen by road sides in the State, which he said poses threat to human health. “As at the time of writing this report, heaps of wastes could be seen in many parts of the State including the road leading to L.E.A, Aliyu Makama beside the Holy Family Catholic Church in Barnawa, Ungwar Sarki and Tudun Wada areas among others,” he noted.
According to him, the erection of illegal structures has distorted the State’s master plan; stressing that there is need for a review and also a need to provide dump sites to reduce indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
 While he called on the State government to grant Kaduna State Environmental and Protective Authority (KEPA) approval to introduce environmental marshals; he advised KEPA to prescribe stiffer sanction on contractors who fail to do their work well and promptly.
