Kaduna to construct solar-powered boreholes for 116 communities

The Director General of the Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Engineer Mubarak Shehu Ladan, has announced that about 116 communities across three Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kaduna State will benefit from the first phase of modern solar-powered boreholes under the Sustainable Urban Rural Water Supply and Hygiene (SURWASH) program.
The three benefiting LGAs are Soba, Igabi, and Chikun. Ladan noted that more communities will be included in the future, as SURWASH has identified six LGAs in the state for the program.
The DG made this disclosure while addressing journalists during the inauguration of the Community Grievance Redress Committee (GRC) by SURWASH in collaboration with RUWASA in the benefiting LGAs.
According to him, the committees are tasked with resolving disputes before, during, and after the construction of the water facilities.
He further stated that the Kaduna State Government, under the leadership of Senator Uba Sani, remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at providing potable water to all communities.
In her remarks, the Social Officer of SURWASH, RUWASA, Ms. Mercy Madaki, emphasized the importance of the GRC in ensuring the sustainability and maintenance of water facilities. She explained that the committees were established to educate community members chosen to serve, enabling them to receive complaints and settle disputes arising at water points.
She added that the committees would also enhance the sense of safety for all users of the facilities.
Also speaking, the Director of Planning and Evaluation at RUWASA, Mr. Jogai Isaac Barnabas, stated that the benefiting communities were carefully selected, ensuring that only those with the greatest need for water received the boreholes.
Mr. Jogai urged the benefiting communities to make judicious use of the facilities and appealed to those yet to benefit to remain patient, assuring them that the program is an ongoing process.
