A source in the Kaduna State Ministry of Environment who did not want his name mentioned disclosed this yesterday, adding that the ministry has already identified all the major roads in the metropolis where there are major drainages.
The source said: “You know, there are smaller drainages that are joined to bigger ones; so it is the bigger ones that we are listing so that we can take their distances and by April or early May, we are going to embark on massive evacuation of refuse or de-silting of the drainages. Possibly, around July and August this year, too, we will go for another round of de-silting, all in a bid to avert flood. Already, we have the list, the distances and the cost implication.”
Commenting on those who raised structures on waterways, he made known that it was the responsibility of the Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Authority (KASUPDA) to take care of that, revealing that a committee was established to deal with the issue.
He added: “KASUPDA and Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) are part of the committee, we will use all security outfits to empower these two agencies to do their work effectively. By the time the committee starts work, all the small kiosks you see in the GRAs will no longer be there. We have already gone round and given them notice. Possibly, we want to also see how we can do away with traders who use wheel barrow to sell their goods on major roads. There are empty shops in the market, which they can rent.”
