The Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) has trained Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Coordinators, as well as Monitoring and Evaluation Officers, on data management and reporting across the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

The training aimed to enhance their capacity and introduce new innovations and ideas to establish a more efficient and robust data management system.

Speaking at the two-day statewide workshop on data management and reporting using the WASH Map system, RUWASA Director General, Engineer Mubarak Shehu Ladan, emphasized the critical role of data in securing support from development partners such as UNICEF and the World Bank.

“Most development partners work with data before making interventions in states. A lot of states have been left out of such interventions due to a lack of proper data, but Kaduna State is fortunate to maintain accurate records,” he said.

He further explained the importance of data-driven decision-making, stressing that accurate data enhances access to investments and development initiatives.

“We are here to train WASH Coordinators and Monitoring and Evaluation Officers on how to report and manage data. Data is the new oil, and without it, nothing can be achieved.

“When investment and development partners come in to intervene, the first thing they ask for is data to determine how they can help. Many states have missed out on interventions due to the absence of proper data,” he added.

The Director-General also urged Local Government Chairmen to take responsibility for financing WASH department operations. This, he said, would enable them to effectively carry out routine activities, logistics, and community monitoring to meet targets set for the sector and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6.1 and 6.2 by 2030.

In his remarks, the Chairman of WASH Coordinators in Kaduna, Shehu Aliyu Lere, highlighted the impact of the training, saying they were introduced to new applications for data management and reporting.

“We were taught how to use new applications for data management and reporting. Without a doubt, this training will enhance our capacity as WASH Coordinators in our respective places of work,” he said.

He commended the organizers for providing them with the opportunity to improve their skills and enhance their work.
