Katsina residents have linked the resurgence in violence to a peace deal with bandits in neighbouring Kaduna State.
“The bandits are threatening us: either we negotiate on their terms or suffer continued attacks,” said Faruk Hayatu, Chairman of Sabuwa LGA.
While similar local peace efforts have taken place in parts of Katsina-such as Jibia, Batsari, and Safana-these have largely involved community leaders and security personnel, without the formal participation of the state government.
The Katsina State government maintains it will not negotiate with criminals, but is willing to accept those who surrender under pressure.
