The Hausa film industry, Kannywood, has seen quite a lot of young talents shine on screen in the last few years. Weekend Magazine takes a look at the youngest stars who have enjoyed flourishing careers in the movie industry.
Hadiza Gabon
Born Hadiza Aliyu, the Gabonese actress moved to Nigeria in the hope of starting a career in acting, which indeed happened and took off in 2009 with the assistance of Ali Nuhu. Her first feature film was ‘Artabu,’ after which she gained fame and achieved major success in Kannywood starring in the likes of ‘Umarnin Uwa,’ ‘Haske’ and ‘Wata Tafi Wata.’
Umar Sheriff
The 31-year -old began his career singing before moving to acting. Sheriff rose to stardom in Kannywood after appearing in Ali Nuhu’s movie ‘Mansoor’ in 2017. He was the winner of last year’s City People’s Award for Kannywood’s best new actor.
Maryam Booth
The actress has been in the industry for over 10 years, starting out since she was six years old, taking after her actress mother Zainab Booth. The 25-year-old started out with her role in ‘Dijingala’ and has continued to remain in the limelight ever since, although she took a break to obtain a degree in Malaysia and only recently concluded her mandatory youth service (NYSC).
Maryam Yahaya
Maryam’s success in Kannywood almost didn’t come to be as the role that established her status in the industry was originally meant to played by actress Bilkisu Shema and was recast at the last minute. Since her stint in the movie, she has become a household name and featured in many other productions.
Nafisat Abdullahi
Starting out at the age of 19, the 28-year-old started her career with ‘Sai Wata Rana’ in 2010, followed by starring roles in the likes of ‘Alhini’ and ‘Marainiya.’ In the same year, Nafisa also starred in Kenneth Gyang’s production of ‘Blood and Henna,’ one of her most successful outings till date. The actress has been classed with some of Kannywood’s most talented actors despite her relatively short period in the industry.
Rahama Sadau
‘The Sons of the Caliphate’ star shot to fame in 2013 in ‘Gani Ga Wata’ alongside Ali Nuhu. She also successfully transitioned to Nollywood in 2016. In 2017, Rahama started her own production company ‘Sadau Pictures,’ producing the hit ‘Rariya.’ Rahama recently finished studying for her bachelor’s degree in Cyprus.
Ramadan Booth
Ramadan Booth is quite young in Kannywood but has nonetheless been able to carve a niche for himself in the industry. Cousin to actress ‘Maryam Booth, one could say that acting runs in the family’s blood. He has starred in productions such as ‘Ja Ni Mu Je’ and ‘Gwarzon Shekara.’
