The Kano State Executive Council has approved N113.19 billion for the construction of a mass housing project aimed at addressing housing shortages in the state.

The project, tagged “Gida Gida Mega City,” will comprise 480 housing units to be built at Rijiyar Gwan-Gwan.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council’s 38th meeting presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Waiya said the project, approved under the Ministry of Housing Development, is intended to boost urban development and provide decent accommodation for residents.

He added that the council also approved N1 billion for the establishment of an Emergency Operations Management Centre at the Government House.

According to him, the council further approved N1.7 billion as compensation for 724 households affected by the proposed 330KVA transmission line project being implemented by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Similarly, N311.38 million was approved as compensation for properties affected by the construction of Kano Line Road off Zaria Road at Naibawa in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The commissioner said the housing project and other approvals form part of the state government’s strategy to promote urban renewal and support economic development.
