Kano state government has approved N50m interest-free loan to wheat farmers as part of measures to prevent possible glut of the produce in the state.

The measure to assist the farmers followed bumper harvest recorded in the wheat farming in the state this year.

The Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna said during a press conference that the measure would address the issue of crash in the wheat’s price.

He said: “It is necessary for the state government to assist the farmers and rescue the situation through establishment of warehouse system that will be spread across  the state where the farmers will register to keep their produce and also have access to interest free loans pending the appreciation of the produce in the market.

“Kano state Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has approved N50m as part of the state government’s commitment to provide necessary support to sustain their farming business. A lot has been done to see that farmers have moved from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture and it is the government duty to ensure sustainability of the positive development so far achieved,” Gawuna said.

Under the newly introduced programme, farmers would have the leverage of accessing market when the price of their produce appreciated with the support of the interest free loan to attend to their needs.
