A Magistrates’ Court No. 27 sitting in Kano has ordered the remand of a local football coach in a correctional facility for allegedly sodomising 23 boys under the pretext of selecting them to play in his team’s first eleven.

The accused, Haruna Mahuta, a resident of Gwarzo LGA of Kano State, was arraigned before the court by the prosecuting counsel, Barrister Saima Garba, on charges bordering on sexual assault and exploitation of minors.

According to the prosecution, Mahuta allegedly took advantage of the victims by luring them into the act with false promises of inclusion in the starting lineup.

When the charge was read, the court noted that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter, given the nature of the alleged offence.

The state counsel informed the court that the case was reported by one of the victims’ parents, alongside other parents from Makartanwa village in Gwarzo Local Government Area.

The magistrate, Abba Musa, ordered that the accused be remanded in a correctional facility pending further investigation and legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The case was adjourned to January 5, for mention.
