The Kano state government has commissioned Fursa Rice Mill Limited’s fortified rice production line, a state-of-the-art facility that is equipped to produce rice fortified with Zinc, Iron, folic acid, vitamins B12, B1, B3 and B6.
Speaking during the commissioning, the state’s Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Ahmad Tijjani Auwalu, described the move as a step forward in marking a significant milestone in addressing malnutrition in Kano State.
He explained that the effort signifies the mill as a pioneering mill in Kano and the third in Nigeria with fortification capabilities, which he said underscores the commitment to combating micronutrient deficiencies not only in Kano state but also in other neighboring states.
The Commissioner also proposed utilizing fortified rice in the state’s school feeding program, recognizing its potential benefits for children’s health.
Similarly, the General Manager (GM) of the rice mill, Alhaji Kabiru Abubakar, expressed gratitude and highlighted the mill’s capacity to promote access to essential minerals and vitamins among vulnerable groups.
The GM of the mill commended the efforts of development partners like the United Nations World Food Program, Partners in Food Solutions, TechnoServe, DSM-Firmenich and the Millers for Nutrition initiative under the auspices of partners for Promoting Rice Fortification in Nigeria (PRiFN) for this great feat.
