Kano community seeks to know difference between tuberculosis, AIDS

This call was made by the village head of Farawa, Alhaji Salisu Muhammad, when the community was celebrating the World Tuberculosis Day in Kano recently.

He said there was need for the authorities and other stakeholders to keep sensitizing the public on the differences between the two diseases that have become endemic in their midst.

The celebration organized by the Society for Family Health (SFH), Kano, in collaboration with Women and Youth Support, was aimed at educating members of the community on TB and its symptoms, which include loss of weight and persistent coughing. Ms Ladi Wayi of WAYS, said the efforts being put in place is for smokers who are predominantly men, to take caution as they are more vulnerable to the disease.

Residents of Sauna Kawaji also joined in the celebrations when Interfaith Peace Foundation held a session with the public on the severity of tuberculosis and the attitude of people towards its prevention and control.

According to Herman Bassey, Programme Officer of the Foundation, the outfit, with the support of CIHPAC, is trying to address issues relating to misconceptions and myths about HIV and tuberculosis.
