Kano state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf has urged broadcast media organisations operating in the state to be vanguards of responsible politics rather than being instruments of promoting hatred and acrimony among political opponents and their supporters.
The commissioner made the call during ‘the police and media stakeholders meeting’ organized by the state police command to chart a way towards checkmating incidences of political thuggery and violence ahead of the 2019 general elections.
He also warned the politicians to desist from politics of calumny saying the command would not hesitate to deal with any politician trying to instigate violence in the state.
He charged the media to always adhere to their codes of ethics so as not to heat up the already tensed political atmosphere heralding the 2019 general elections.
Yusuf said “politics is not about violence but about meeting the aspirations of the people.
“Everybody has the constitutional right to go to the radio stations to talk to members of the public to be able to convince them as to why his candidate is better than others, however, while doing that there should be a sort of decorum on how they air their opinions.
“You should ensure that if such people are there to propagate the activities of their political gladiators at least they should do it with all sense of responsibility. We are appealing, in no account you should allow them to promote either hate speech or provoke their opponents” he added.
In his remarks, a staff officer, Nigerian Broadcasting Commission Malam Jamilu Yahaya Jega emphasized the need for all media houses to stick to the codes of the practice, stressing that the NBC would not hesitate to sanction any station that is found wanting.
