Donating the food items at Mambayya House, the Special Adviser to the state governor on women affairs, Hajiya Binta ‘yar Mulki, said the food were distributed to alleviate the problems faced by the women.

According to her, the decision by the state governor to assist this vulnerable group was timely because of the abject poverty most of these women are living in.

She added that the donation was not the first one. “This is not the first time we have distributed food items to widows and divorcees. We have been doing so from time to time and in three months time, we are planning another empowerment programme for the women.”

The Special Adviser said the 2,000 widows and divorcees come from across the 44 local government areas of Kano State.

In her speech, the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Halima Shekarau, urged well-to-do individuals in the society to supplement government’s efforts by assisting the widows and orphans in their midst. She explained that assisting them was a meritorious act as preached by the prophet of Islam.
