The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) which comprises Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states has appealed to residents to exercise patience over the drop in power generation.
According to a statement issued by KEDCO spokesperson, Mohammed Kandi, power allocation to Kano DisCo dropped to 84 Mega Watts (MW), as the current generation profile descended to less than 3, 697 MW against the peak of 5, 074 MW achieved earlier in February.
Kandi called on all customers not to panic as concerned authorities in the sector were working assiduously to address the problem.
The company’s Chief Technical Officer, Engr. David O. Omoloye, linked the helpless situation to poor gas supply to generation companies (GenCos) in the country, which supply the DisCos with energy that is distributed to the end user, the statement said.
On his part, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Jamilu Ishiyaku Gwamna explained that the DisCos were stranded in the face of the scanty power allocation. He requested all power consumers in Nigeria, including the organised labour and members of the media to help disseminate accurate information so as to create positive understanding of the power sector value chain.
“Last week, Kano DisCo only received an average of 140 MW daily and this is inconsistent compared to the recent development in our daily allocation. This week, the situation became even worst given us little or no choice than to drop load as directed by the National Control Centre (NCC) to stabilise the system and thereby leading to load rationing.
“Because we always wanted to be on the same page with all our customers, we will not hesitate to make them understand how the power sector now works under the new system,” he said.
