Kano state government has spent N4, 485,999.000.00 on feeding of 48, 630 students of secondary schools within two years, the state Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, said.

Professor Abubakar, who stated this while presenting the achievements of the state ministry of education in two years at a town hall meeting in commemoration of 2-year anniversary of Ganduje-led administration, said each student was fed with N189.00 daily.

The deputy governor, who is also the state commissioner of education, said the students were from both science and non-science secondary schools in the state.

Abubakar explained that out of the figures, government had paid over N3, 789.000.000.00 while payment of the balance of over N596m would be effected soon.

He also disclosed that the state government spent over N2bn on payment of examinations fees including Common Entrance examination, West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and transitional examinations.

Professor Abubakar recalled that the state government established Education Promotion Committees and released N440m to the 44 local government areas for the purpose of improving education in the state.

The deputy governor, who also doubled as chairman of the state education promotion committee, said the state and local governments’ education promotion committees had, within two years, generated N826, 245,891.00 making the total money to N1, 266,245,891.00.

“Out of the money, we have constructed 150 blocks structures, 301 classrooms, repaired 653 blocks and 1,288 classrooms respectively. We have also provided 15,250 3-seater chairs which were distributed to various schools across the state.”

“Interestingly, the management of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has already contacted the state government with a view to adopting its model of education promotion committee,” he said.

He also said another achievement recorded by the state in education sub-sector was the commencement of degree programme by Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education which is currently running 12 degree programmes in affiliation with Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

Professor Abubakar said the college, which has the highest number of students in the country, would soon introduce two additional computer science courses.

The deputy governor said government had also provided 13 additional Computer Based Test (CBT) centers in the state in order to ease hardships being faced by candidates while writing Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
