Kano State government has signed a subsidiary agreement with the federal government for the implementation of the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project.
The World Bank supported project aims to help reverse threats to land, water resources and livelihoods, and will be implemented in seven states, including Kano.
In his remarks shortly after signing the memorandum of understanding, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, assured that the government would provide its counterpart funding to make sure that citizens of the state reap the advantages of the project.
“This part of the country is having the problem of gully erosion and other forms of land degradation and unless something is done, eventually our farmlands will be reduced,” the governor stated.
The representative of the World Bank Country Director in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Abu, said that the bank invested $508 million in the project in Nigeria, and called on the Kano State government to release its counterpart funding of N300 million to fast track its implementation in the state.
