The Kano State Government has commenced the review of the Kano Metropolitan City Masterplan, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing commerce, fostering innovation, promoting tourism, and driving sustainable socio-economic development across the state.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Alhaji AbdulJabbar Mohammed Umar, during the opening of a one-day stakeholder engagement workshop held on Tuesday in Kano.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Town Planner Muhammad Yahuza, described the workshop as a critical platform for collaboration among stakeholders to deliberate, cross-fertilize ideas, and collectively chart the pathway for a renewed masterplan aligned with contemporary development standards while preserving the rich heritage of the state.
Alhaji AbdulJabbar emphasized the importance of safeguarding Kano’s historical assets, particularly the centuries-old city walls, noting that “the current review must consider the sanctity and preservation of these landmarks, which are not only a testament to our glorious past but also a source of pride for our people.”
He added that the revised masterplan would integrate modern urban elements to maintain Kano’s status as a regional hub for commerce, innovation, and culture, while promoting sustainable development through balanced growth and environmental protection, and enhancing vital infrastructure including transportation and public services.
The masterplan review is being undertaken with the technical expertise of Circle Design Limited, the appointed consultant for the project.
In her remarks, the Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), Architect Hauwa Hassan, highlighted that the workshop is a step toward transforming Kano into a modern, organized, technology-driven, commercially vibrant, investment-friendly, and tourist-attractive metropolis.
She noted that the masterplan would address urban renewal through revitalizing existing neighborhoods, provide modern amenities to strengthen infrastructure, promote economic growth by encouraging investment and entrepreneurship, and ensure sustainability by balancing expansion with environmental stewardship.
“Our vision is to make Kano a hub for commerce, innovation, and tourism,” Architect Hassan reiterated.
The workshop drew participation from government officials, private sector partners, traditional institutions, and civil society stakeholders, who all pledged their commitment to supporting the state’s development aspirations through the successful delivery of the revised masterplan.
