The Kano State Government has welcomed a Court of Appeal verdict affirming the legality of recent local government elections in the state, describing the ruling as a resounding victory for democracy and constitutional governance.

In a statement on Friday, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the government was elated by the judgment, which overturned an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court in Kano that had attempted to halt the elections.

The appellate court, sitting in Abuja and presided over by Justice Oyewumi, ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to entertain a suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which had challenged the credibility of the elections.

The suit also alleged bias on the part of the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Sani Lawan Malumfashi.

However, the Court of Appeal upheld the appeal filed by the state government, validating the conduct and outcome of the elections as legally binding.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reacted to the ruling by hailing it as a triumph of justice and the rule of law.

“This judgment affirms our unwavering belief in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, a critical pillar of democratic governance, and protector of constitutional integrity,” the governor said.

Yusuf noted that the decision endorsed the state’s commitment to conducting a transparent and credible electoral process across all 44 local government areas and 484 wards.

He also praised the people of Kano for their patience and political maturity while awaiting the court’s verdict, noting that their calmness reflects deep democratic awareness.

“The government remains fully committed to grassroots development and will continue supporting democratically elected local councils to deliver the dividends of democracy,” the statement read.

Waiya congratulated Governor Yusuf and the people of the state, saying the judgment had reinforced public confidence in both the electoral process and the judiciary.

“This victory belongs to all lovers of democracy. It validates the will of the people freely expressed at the polls,” he added.
