Kano State government has revealed that it has entered into a collaborative agreement with Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) in presenting a unique opportunity for farmers to learn how to produce, process and market aflatoxin-free maize that will compete favourably with any variety worldwide.
This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who was represented by the Director Planning in the ministry, Engineer Balarabe Sabo, during the official opening ceremony of an awareness workshop on mycotoxins and control using Aflasafe Inoculum, organised for maize farmers in the state.
He said that the workshop was organised in consideration of the vital role the maize value chain plays in food security, poverty alleviation and human development.
The commissioner also revealed that the determination of the state government to promote commercial farming hinges on the fact that farming has been transformed into a more productive, intensive and efficient business to enable farmers to contribute to the state economic development by providing efficient raw materials for local industries and jobs for the populace.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Agriculture, who was represented at the occasion by the ministry’s Director of Administration and Services, Abbah Wada Waziri, said the state government and CADP in collaboration with IITA have been fighting the menace of aflatoxin contamination in maize, adding that 250 maize farmers, processors and marketers drawn from the 44 local governments were participating in the workshop.
