The State’s Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji Garba Durbunde, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Wednesday.
Durbunde said that the provision of the toilets which was also supported with solar-powered boreholes was to stop open defecation in the communities.
He said that the projects were executed in the last two years, adding that they were jointly financed by the state government and benefitting local government areas.
He said that N407 million was spent on the construction of the boreholes while the toilets gulped N338.8 million.
The commissioner said the boreholes and latrines were provided in selected rural markets across the 36 council areas in the state.
“The project is part of the state government’s commitment to extend the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the people, particularly the rural dwellers and to stop open defecation,’’ he said.
He said the decision to carry out the project was borne out of the government’s desire to ensure that a healthy environment existed at market places, particularly in rural areas.
Durbunde said 80 per cent of the projects had been completed and functioning while work on the remaining 20 per cent was at advanced stage.
He said that the state government had charged the councils with the responsibility of maintaining the facilities by contributing “a little amount on annual basis”.
The commissioner announced that the government had concluded plans to construct more public conveniences in the remaining eight local government areas in 2015, saying that it had been provided for in the 2915 budget.
According to him, no fewer than 50 toilets, with boreholes, will be constructed in markets, motor parks and at some popular junctions in the council areas.
Durbunde said the state government had also directed the eight local councils within Kano metropolis to construct additional toilets in the city, adding that councils were expected to charge users of the facilities.
He called on wealthy individuals to construct more toilet facilities for commercial purposes to complement government’s efforts at ending open defecation in the state. (NAN)
