Head of Public Affairs of the agency, Mitchell Ofoyeju in a statement made available to Weekly Trust indicate that within the first six months of this year, Kano and Kebbi States had 79 people convicted each by various courts for drug peddling being the highest from any single state in the country.

 

The statement indicated that Adamawa is next with 59 convictions, Plateau 56, Osun 42, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) 39, Lagos 34, Niger 29, Cross River and Jigawa 27 convictions each. Others are Gombe and Oyo States with 25 convictions each, Kaduna 24 and Akwa Ibom 21.

Earlier in 2010, Kano State came highest in the country with number of drug abuse cases and arrests made by the agency with the chairman and chief executive officer of the agency, Ahmadu Giade urging Nigerians travelling out of the country to shun drug trafficking.

“Drug trafficking is criminal and leads to shame and regrets. It affects the economy and threatens security of lives. Nigerians seeking greener pastures outside the country must endeavor to be good ambassadors. Anyone caught outside the country over drug trafficking will not win the sympathy of the government.”
