It is obvious that the world’s population is continuously increasing and Africa is one of the fast growing continents. In Africa, Nigeria is the fastest hence the congestion in terms of housing, schools, shops and markets, traffic and other land uses competing for limited land space especially in towns and cities. Most of the cities in Nigeria affected by this menace are Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Anambra to mention but a few. In order to reduce the stress of parking and any form of danger or insecurity to cars and owners, most states like Lagos and Ogun decided to provide multi-storey car park facilities to meet up the demand of packing.
In 2013, at an Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the then governor of Kano state Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso made a disclosure that the state will construct a multi-storey car park in the state capital. This news brought joy and hope to the people of Kano State who looked forward to the commencement of the multi-storey car park project. A multi-storey car park or packing garage is a building which is designed specifically to be for automobile parking and where there are a number of floors or levels on which parking takes place. It is essentially a stacked car park.
In 2014, the multi-storey car park at Shahuci, near Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Ado Bayero Road, Kano was erected but three years after the past administration left office, the project is yet to be completed till date. The Ganduje administration has neglected the project dashing the joy and hope of the people of Kano. The lack of continuity of our politicians has kept that project on a stand still. A visit to the abandoned project shows a place that is inhabited by hoodlums and almajiri. While part of the building is used by food sellers and other petty traders for their businesses, the other part is used for refuse dumping.
It is high time our politicians stopped being selfish, avoid animosity between themselves and be selfless. That will do our country much good and save our resources. It will increase our revenues and also create more job opportunities for the citizenry. Continuity should be their utmost priority. So much money has been deposited into most projects in and around the country yet, such projects have been abandoned either because the current administration is not in good terms with his predecessor or because they are not from the same party. Apparently, if you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools.
